Backlinks are all about quality. Of course, those 50 backlinks if they have valuable, relevant sources (or at least from pages with higher PR and some relevance for the webpage you're building links for) could weight a whole lot then stacks of low quality backlinks generated through automatic processes, massive reciprocation and from unrelated, off-topic websites. You hit the nail right in the head with this question! That's the link building philosophy - Quality over Quantity. Quality= relevance, higher PR, link inside contextual text body. And remember, Page Rank is assigned to individual pages and not for entire sites.
